Civilization's Beginning
The Story of Ancient Mesopotamia

The Tigris and Euphrates rivers created an area of fresh, fertile land in an otherwise very dry place. Living between the two rivers was ideal for early settlers to farm… until they would flood and destroy everything. This created a hot Mess o' potamia.

To remedy this, the settlers dug canals to split the rivers and divert the water. Imagine your arm is the Tigris — one connected body of water. Now spread your fingers wide. The water reaching your hand divides among your five fingers. That is how the first Mesopotamians tamed the flood, and how civilization began.
